      San Marino Visa Policy

San Marino is a small landlocked enclave sandwiched inside Italy. Although it is not a member of the European Economic Area or the European Union, it practices the same immigration policy as the EU. The only accessible route to San Marino is through Italy, as its larger neighbor surrounds it. The decision to subscribe to Schengen immigration policies is only logical as visitors must pass through Italy to reach its borders, and Italy is a Schengen nation.

Schengen visa rules are observed, so any visitor looking to study for more than 30 days per visit must apply for a permit from the San Marino government. This is a far cry from Schengen visa rules which allows citizens of visa-free countries to stay in the region for up to 90 days in six months.

      San Marino Bi-lateral Agreement

San Marino has signed independent visa waiver agreements with foreign countries, which are largely symbolic. These agreements don’t have much of an effect on passport holders of San Marino ancestry. The nation-state has signed agreements with several countries for ordinary, diplomatic, and service passport holders.

Visitors should not expect to have their passports stamped at the port of entry because San Marino doesn’t have passport control. However, they will be issued a souvenir stamp at the tourism office, considered an official government stamp.

      San Marino ETIAS

Despite not being a Schengen country, the enclave will still subscribe to the European Travel Information Authorization System once it becomes operational in 2024. Travelers from Italy to San Marino will be subjected to the same Schengen policies and requirements, just like visitors from other Schengen countries.

ETIAS has been launched and is currently in the testing phase, but from the start of 2024, citizens from visa-exempt countries will only be allowed to enter Schengen countries for short visits with one.

ETIAS is a visa waiver document open to citizens of more than 60 countries who don’t need visas to enter the region. Passport holders include the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, and others. If you don’t need a visa for a short-term visit to Europe, you must apply for ETIAS to visit San Marino in 2024.

This visa waiver permit is available online, so applicants don’t have to visit any embassy or consulate to get it. It takes only a few minutes to complete the application, which will be approved or disapproved on the same day. The process involves screening the applicant’s information across multiple online security databases for crime records, health risks, etc. The screening process may take up to 30 minutes, but only those whose information doesn’t trigger security alerts will get their ETIAS.

If you need a visa to enter the Schengen Area, you should visit the Italian embassy to apply for a Schengen or long-stay visa: with this document, you can visit San Marino.

Key Information About San Marino ETIAS And Travel Tips

Here are some things to bear in mind as you prepare for your application and trip to San Marino.

Eligibility: The first thing to remember is that ETIAS is not for everyone but only for visitors from visa-exempt countries. Consult the current list of visa waiver countries, and if your country is absent, know that you are not eligible for ETIAS but must apply for a Schengen visa.

Not A Visa: This online authorization is not a visa and should not be treated as one. Before the European Commission visa unveiled the program, exempt visitors didn’t bed visas to enter Schengen Europe, including San Marino. This permit is a security clearance for short-term visits.

Passport Validity: All applications must come with passports with a minimum of 6 months of validity; otherwise, they will be rejected. The same passport requirements are mandatory for subsequent visits to San Marino and other nations and territories in the region.

180 Days Cycle: Visitors may find the 180-day rule confusing, but it shouldn’t be. This rule is simply to regulate the inflow of visitors from visa-exempt countries. If you are from visa-exempt countries with ETIAS, you are not allowed to stay in the Schengen zone for more than 90 days in 180 days. If you wish to stay longer, you must leave the Zone and wait for the six months bracket to elapse before returning. Your time will start counting from the next day after you arrive in the Schengen zone.

Separate Policy: Please bear in mind that San Marino may have a separate policy, but it conforms with the policy of Italy and the wider Schengen area. Do your inquiry to see if there are any changes and plan accordingly.

Security Vetting: The ETIAS application will require you if, which will be screened across multiple databases for crimes and health risks. This screening process takes only a few minutes, and a decision will be made soon after. If your application triggers a security alert, your request will be denied. However, you may re-apply at a later date.
