Papua New Guinea (PNG) Visa Policy

According to the visa policy of Papua New Guinea, visitors must hold valid visas to enter the island unless they are from visa-exempt countries. Also popularly called PNG (abbreviated term), this Island nation in the Pacific Ocean issues visas through different means, such as the online visa or visas issued by its foreign missions abroad. There is also a visa on arrival for selected nationalities, but all visitors must have passports with a minimum of 6 months' validity.

Papua New Guinea Visa Waiver Program

The government of Papua New Guinea has a visa waiver program for foreign nationals from selected countries. These nationals are free to enter the country without visas for short visits. The countries that qualify for the visa waiver programs are selected based on bilateral agreements the PNG government has with other nations, most of whom are fellow Pacific countries.  Some other countries also appear on the visa waiver list even though they don't have such agreements with the PNG government.

Visa free visitors don't require visas to enter PNG, all they need is a valid passport with 6 months validity as a bare minimum, a return flight ticket and funds for travel and living expenses.  This visa waiver list is already changing to check for your country to decide whether you j Ed w list or not

Visa On Arrival

There is a visa on arrival for visitors arriving in Port Moresby or Rabaul Tokua. This document is only available to some visitors but only to citizens from eligible territories and countries on the visa-on-arrival list. Visa-on-arrival visitors are allowed to stay for up to 60 days but may also apply for extensions after submitting an application and paying a fee.

Electronic Visa (e Visa)

The PNG e-visa was launched in 2018, and ever since, citizens from eligible countries can apply. This visa is open to visa on Arrival eligible applicants and additional countries. With a valid e-visa, you can stay in PNG for 30 days, and the visa is valid for 60 days from the issue date.  Applications for e visas are done online so applicants don't have to visit a PNG foreign office to submit their applications.

Part of the requirements include a valid passport with at least 6 months validity, a cover letter explaining the purpose of a trip and a bank statement to prove that you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses throughout your stay on the island.

Applicants will also need a valid email address to receive the electronic visa once the application is approved. To avail of an r visa you must satisfy the following conditions.

  • You must hold a valid passport  issued by an eligible country
  • Your intention for the visit must not be work or study related
  • You must not exceed the approved days of visa free stay
  • You must possess enough funds to meet your needs
  • You must hold a return ticket for the exit trip

Key Information For Papua New Guinea e-Visa

Before submitting your online application for an electronic visa for Papua New Guinea, here are some vital points to take note of.

Only For Short-Term Visits: Online visas are not long-stay visas for residency, study, or employment but for short visits. On no account should you stay in the country much longer than the allotted time, which may be 30 or 90 days. Also, your e-visa cannot be converted to a long-term visa. If you must stay in PNG as a long-term resident, you must apply to the PNG consulate for a consular visa.

Not For Employment: You are not allowed to work in PNG with an electronic visa, and E visas do not qualify you for a work permit as it is a nonimmigrant visa for short visits. If you have secured employment on the island and wish to work, you can only do that after obtaining a work visa.

Please print out The Visa: Although the visa is generated electronically, you should still print out a copy because the immigration officers at the port of entry may likely ask for it alongside other documents.

Traveling With Minors: If you are traveling with minors, you will have to provide extra documents like a birth certificate if you are the parent or a parental consent form if you are the legal guardian. These documents should be uploaded during the application and also brought along for the trip. Furthermore, the minor must also have their visa, which you can apply for on their behalf.

Use The Same Passport: You must use the same passport for your trip as was used for the application.

This is because the passport is linked to the visa, and traveling with a different passport is tantamount to not having a visa at all, and you will not be allowed into the island.

Nonrefundable Fee: The application fee is mandatory, without which you will not be able to submit your application form. The fee is payable online with a credit or debit card. This fee is not refundable and doesn't guarantee that you will get the visa if you are not eligible for it or you don't have the required documents. Before initiating payment, make sure the card is valid and contains sufficient amounts to cover the application fee and the transaction cost.

One Visa Per Traveler: A Papua New Guinea e-Visa can only be used by one traveler, not two or more. The visa is neither transferable nor can be converted to a residential or work visa, and it is strictly for short-term visits and nothing more.

Use Approved Routes: Although e-visa visitors can access PNG by air, land, and sea, they are only allowed to use approved routes. Using a different route will lead to entry denial.

Don't overstay: Last but not least is the duration of stay. You are legal visitors as long as your visa remains valid; the moment the visa expires, you become an illegal visitor and thus are grounds for sanctions. So make sure you make your exit on or before the last valid day your visa allows.
