Pakistan Visa Policy

The Passport Rules 1955 is the foundational law regulating the entry and exit of foreigners who require visas and can enter visa-free. For those who require visas, the government of Pakistan introduced the e visa Program and visa on arrival for selected nationalities to increase their access to visa services. These visas are issued for only two purposes, tourism, and business, and they are short-term visas.

Visitors who want to visit Pakistan for long-term engagements must submit applications to the Pakistani diplomatic mission in their country. The law also allows people to travel in your groups if they come for the right reasons and meet all the documentary requirements. Furthermore, they must apply for a visa from their country unless in the case of a visa on arrival.

There are three ways to apply for a visa online, at the airport, or at the Pakistani embassy abroad.

While most foreign nationals can apply for a Pakistani visa at the embassy, the visa on arrival and e visa is only open to some. In the case of e-visas, it takes 24-72 hours for the application to be approved, and it is open to all countries except for the following.

Citizens from these countries cannot apply for e visas

  • Armenia
  • Afghanistan
  • Chad
  • Bhutan
  • DR Congo
  • India
  • Eswatini
  • Israel
  • Libya
  • North Korea
  • Mauritania
  • Sudan
  • Somalia
  • Syria
  • Yemen

Note: These countries may be removed from the list in future or more countries may be added to it. Make sure you are certain that your country is not on the list before submitting your application.

Difference Between Pakistan ETA and E Visa

You may find the Pakistani electronic travel authorization and the electronic visa confusing especially if you are eligible for both of them but there are marked differences. The ETA is a simplified entry document to obtain and offers applicants more options while the e Visa is limited. For starters, you should know that the ETA is not necessarily a visa but a legal document that allows the holder to apply for a visa on arrival once they arrive in Pakistan. However, the e Visa is an actual visa that grants the holder access into Pakistan without the need to apply for any other entry document.

Another difference between them is the number of days for processing time; while both are speedily processed, ETA applications are approved faster and on the same day compared to e visas that may take up to 2 -3 days.

Lastly, fewer countries apply for ETA compared to e visa. While only over 50 foreign nationalities are eligible for ETA, almost all other natural nationalities qualify for e visa excluding the few exceptions listed at the beginning of the article.

You can consult the list of countries to check for your eligibility before applying for ETA or e visa.

Key Information About Pakistan ETA/ e Visa

When applying for a Pakistan ETA or e-Visa, here are some things to remember.

Use Only Valid Documents: Ensure you use only valid documents for your application. Avoid expired or wrong document uploads, which will result in application rejection.

Don’t Overstay: Never overstay beyond the maximum days allowed under the arrangement; otherwise, you will be fined before leaving the country. It is an immigration violation to stay as an Illegal alien in Pakistan.

You Will Be Interrogated: Remember that despite having all the documents and e-visa, the immigration officers on duty will still ask you questions about your trip. Endeavor to answer their questions as clearly as possible. The immigration officers have every right under the law to deny a visitor entry into Pakistan even if they have a visa. The only way to avoid issues is to answer questions honestly and ensure your answers correlate with the information on your visa.

The Fee Is Non-Refundable: The e-visa application fee you pay is nonrefundable even if your application is rejected. The fee must be paid with a credit or debit card.

Use The Same Passport: Make sure you travel to Pakistan with the same international passport you used for the application. Your e Visa or ETA is linked to your passport so traveling with a different passport will lead to entry denial because the immigration officers on duty will assume that you don't have a legal entry document. You also want to make sure that your passport will remain valid throughout your time in the country. Your passport must have a minimum of 6 months validity from your arrival date in Pakistan. If it expires sooner, get a new passport.
