Renew Your Passport Online With New Beta System

U.S. citizens can now renew their passports online, thanks to the U.S. Department of State’s new beta version of the updated online passport renewal system. This initiative follows President Biden's 2021 executive order aimed at streamlining government services as part of pandemic recovery efforts.

Although the system is still in the beta phase, here’s everything you need to know about the new process.

Eligibility Criteria:

To renew your passport online, you must meet specific requirements:

  • Your passport must have been valid for 10 years and issued between 2009 and 2015.
  • You must be 25 years or older.
  • You cannot be changing your name, gender, or place of birth.

If you do not meet these criteria, you will need to renew your passport by mail or in person at a passport agency or center. For a complete list of eligibility requirements, visit the official U.S. Department of State website.

Application Process:

Confirm Eligibility: Make sure you meet all the requirements for online renewal.
Create an Account: Go to the MyTravelGov homepage and create an account.
Start Your Application: Begin your application by clicking the “Renew Your Passport” button.
Enter Passport Information: Provide details from your most recent passport.
Enter Travel Plans: Input your travel plans to ensure you meet the online renewal requirements.
Upload a Digital Photo: Upload an original, digital photo in .JPEG format (no selfies or scanned photos).
Sign and Pay: Complete the application by signing electronically and paying the necessary fees.
Enroll in Email Updates: Opt to receive email updates about the status of your application.

Additional Information

Limited Availability: The online system will be open for a limited window each day, primarily in the middle of the day (Eastern Time). Once the daily limit is reached, the system will close. If you cannot start your application on a specific day, try again another day.
Processing Time: Expect a processing time of at least eight weeks from the date you submit your renewal application.
System Monitoring: The Department of State is limiting the number of daily applications during the beta phase to monitor the system’s performance in real-time.
Status Tracking: You can track your application status through the Online Passport Status System and receive notifications when your application is in process, approved, or if additional information is needed.
Technical Issues: Be aware that there may be temporary technical issues as the system launches.

The Department of State plans to continue limiting the number of applications accepted daily over the next several months to ensure a smooth rollout and improve the system based on user feedback. They appreciate your patience as they prepare for a full launch of the updated online passport renewal system.
