However, not everyone requires this visa for short visits. Keep reading to learn more.

Who Doesn't Need A Visa For Ecuador?

The Ecuador visa is not required for South American citizens who can enter freely even if they don't have passports. The only South Americans who need a passport to enter Ecuador are Venezuelans, but even they don't need a visa either. Most South Africans are allowed entry by showing valid ID cards at the airport or border crossing into Ecuador.

Who Needs An Ecuadorian Visa?

A visa is required for non South Americans coming for short or long-term visits. Such visitors must submit a valid passport, a completed visa application form, one photograph, an active travel medical insurance certificate, and a return ticket back to their countries. The visa fee for the application is $50, while a separate $150 is paid after the visa is approved.

Staying In Ecuador

Visitors are advised to adhere to the country's laws during their stay and must carry a valid means of identity along. Depending on their visa, they can extend it for 90 days by filling out the Prorroga online form. The other option extension is to visit the immigration offices in Cuenca, Guayaquil, Quito, or elsewhere.

Extensions take a little while, so applying as early as possible is advisable so you don't overstay due to late approval. Furthermore, it is unwise to leave the country if you are on a temporary resident visa. If you must leave, don't study beyond the days of grace, as overstaying will lead to visa cancellation.

Note: Leaving Ecuador and returning does not inadvertently trigger a visa renewal.
