      Denmark Visa Policy

According to Denmark's visa policy, any visitor coming to the country must apply for a visa unless they are exempted from doing so due to their nationality. Denmark is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area. For this reason, it maintains the same visa policy with other member states within the EU, a union of about 27 members and counting. Under the visa Policy, there is freedom of movement for EU citizens who can cross borders and reside in member states without the need for visas.

EU citizens are also free to indefinitely participate in any legal trade or activity of their choice. They only need to travel with a valid ID card if they don't have passports.

This grace, however, is not extended to non-EU citizens. To visit Denmark as a non-EU citizen, you either need a Schengen visa or a European Travel Information and Authorization System permit (ETIAS).

Currently, there are close to 100 nationalities that can enter Denmark, while the others do need visas. So as a visitor, you belong to one of both groups; the visa-exempt visitor or the non-visa-exempt visitor.

      Denmark Schengen Visa

The Danish Schengen visa is designed for short trips that will only last 90 days maximum. This visa is recognized by all Schengen countries in Europe, including non-Schengen countries like Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Romania. If you hold this visa, you are free to visit Denmark and other member states. You can visit for tourism or business or even use it as a transit visa to connect to another country by air. The Schengen visa is issued by the Danish embassy or consulate abroad after processing a completed application form and set of documents you must submit.

The application process may take up to six months or more, depending on several factors. You cannot work in Denmark with a Schengen visa, but you must apply for a different visa if you wish to. Schengen visas are valid for 180 days after the issue date.

It Is noteworthy to be informed that persons from visa-exempt countries don't need to apply for Schengen visas, nor do EU citizens who already enjoy visa-free access.

      Denmark ETIAS

Before now, visitors that qualified for visa-free entry under the Schengen visa waiver program only needed valid passports to enter Denmark, but all that is set to change by 2024. The EU Commission has been working on a pre-screening system since 2016, and the program has been launched. This is called the European Travel Information and Authorization System, or ETIAS for short.

ETIAS is an electronic screening system for visa waiver visitors. It is already undergoing a testing phase, but from the beginning of 2024, all visitors from visa-eligible countries must apply for it before coming. Visitors must have an ETIAS permit to be allowed into Denmark or any other country in the Schengen zone.

To apply for ETIAS, enter your details into an online form and submit it for processing. Once submitted, the system will screen your details to ascertain water you pose any threat to Denmark or greater Europe; this process takes only a few minutes, and if no security alert is triggered, your ETIAS permit will be forwarded to your email.

The general purpose of ETIAS is to increase Europe's security and prevent dangerous elements from crossing through its borders from countries on the visa-exempt list. ETIAS will be valid for three years, and holders can stay in member states for 90 days within a 180-day period. The Permit will also be used as a multiple-entry document but cannot be used for work.

      Key Information About Denmark ETIAS

Mind The 180-Day Cycle: Under the travel rules, you cannot stay in the Schengen area for more than 90 days in 6 months. If you must stay longer, you have to exit the area first and then return once the 180th day elapses. The cycle starts counting from the moment you set foot in the Schengen Zone.

Never Work With ETIAS: This online authorization permit is not a work visa, so you must never work with it in Denmark or any other Schengen country during your visit.

Respect The Primary Destination Rule: This Schengen rule mandates visitors who intend to travel to more than one Schengen country to visit their primary destination first. If Denmark is your primary destination, apply for a Danish ETIAS, but if not, apply to the country you aim to enter first.

Use The Same Passport: When traveling to Denmark, always use the same passport for your trip; by this, we mean that your application and travel passports should be one and the same because they are linked. You will be denied entry if you arrive with a different passport.
