Burkina Faso Visa Policy
Burkina Faso is sovereign West African nation with its visa policy that regulates the flow of foreign nationals in and out of the country. Under the current policy, visitors must apply for a visa and get it before their arrival unless they are from visa-exempt countries. Burkinabe diplomatic missions abroad are responsible for accepting and processing visas on behalf of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, and they also issue visas to eligible applicants on behalf of the Ministry.
Besides these missions, visitors ineligible for visa-free entry may also get visas online or at the arrival point. Burkina Faso currently has a visa waiver list comprising countries whose citizens may visit without having valid visas. This list is mostly made up of other West African countries that are members of the Economic Community of West Africa (Ecowas)
ECOWAS citizens may enter Burkina Faso’s territory at any time of the year without holding visas and stay uninterrupted for up to 90 days. The list is completed by a few other non-West African countries whose citizens enjoy the same entry privileges.
The visa-on-arrival program is extended to more than 50 nationalities who may stay in Burkina Faso for up to 1 month. Eligible visitors may apply for a single or multiple entry arrival visa at different costs depending on their itinerary, and both are valid for three months, respectively. Furthermore, Burkina Faso issues arrival visas to citizens of some count who have valid Schengen visas issued by any Schengen member states, including holders of special, service, diplomatic, and official passports holders of some countries. There are also Visas on arrival for persons with Interpol passports traveling on duty.
Transit Travelers
The Transit visa is optional for all transit passengers depending on their nationality and duration of stay. For instance, South African passengers require transit visas to switch flights at any Burkina Faso airport. Some other nationalities may transit through Burkina Faso without transit visas, but they must show confirmed onward flight tickets and must only stay back for up to 24 hours.
Burkina Faso e Visa
The Burkina Faso e visa is an electronic visa issued to visitors coming for short term visits.
It is primarily issued for tourism and family visits, but business visitors and transit passengers flying to a third country may also apply for it. E visas are easy to apply for as you don’t have to visit the embassy to apply in person. The application can be submitted online, and the visa can be issued online if approved.
E visas are electronically linked to the holder’s passport, so holders are advised to always travel with the same passport used for the e-visa registration. Only applicants who meet the following eligibility criteria will get the visa
- They must not be visiting for work
- Their passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay
- They must have the financial capacity to support themselves during their stay in Burkina
- They must be of good character and have a clean criminal record
Key Information About Burkina Faso Transit e Visa
Here are some things you need to know about Burkina Faso e Visa.
Not For West Africans: If you are from a West African country, you don’t need this visa or any visa for short visits. You may only need one if you wish to work or stay in the county for a long time. West African citizens enjoy 90-day visa-free trips to all ECOWAS countries, including Burkina Faso.
Not for Expatriates: This e-visa is not for foreigners looking for work or already contracted to work in Burkina Faso. It is strictly for noncommercial visits to the country. If an employer has employed you, kindly ask them to help you secure a work visa and permit with the appropriate authorities. Upon arrival, you will be a work and residency permit after a few weeks.
Non-Extendable: Bear in mind that this e visa is issued as a one-off document, either as a single or multiple entry visa and cannot be extended. You must apply for a new one upon expiration if you wish to return to the country.
Application Fee: The application fee is mandatory for all applicants. This fee must be paid before you can submit your application to the Burkinabe authorities online. Multiple entry visas cost more than single entry visas, so check the current fees before moving forward with your application.
Print A Copy: Always print a copy of your e-visa once you get it and travel with it. The officers on duty will ask for it at the Checkpoint, and you may even be asked to provide it while you are already inside Burkina Faso.
Never Overstay: This e-visa becomes active, and the countdown to the expiration date begins as soon as it is issued to you. Ensure you arrive in the country to conclude your activities as soon as possible and leave before or on the day it expires. Failure to leave on time will expire the visa while you are still within Burkina Faso’s territorial borders, and you will be fined on your way out. Fines are charged based on the number of excess days spent in the country.
