      Botswana Visa Policy

Unless you are from a visa-exempt country, you must get a visa before traveling to Botswana.

The Immigration Act of 2011 clearly states that visitors must obtain visas for trips to the county unless they are citizens of one of the 103 countries and jurisdictions that don’t need visas. Visa-exempt visitors can stay in Botswana for up to 90 days within 12 months.

According to the visa policy, all visitors coming to Botswana must hold a passport with at least six months minimum validity, regardless of whether they require visas. Furthermore, holders of diplomatic and service passports from India can enter Botswana without visas.

      Botswana e Visa

The Botswana e-visa was unveiled in 2021 for citizens from countries not on the visa-free list. So if your country is not on the list but would like to visit Botswana for a short period, you can apply for an electronic visa.

Key Details About Botswana e Visa

When applying for an electronic visa for Botswana, there are some tips to bear in mind.  We review some of the important details below.

Apply Outside Botswana: An electronic visa is like any other consular visa which cannot be applied for inside the country. To avail of this electronic visa you must apply for it when you are outside the country. Visas must be applied for in advance of your trip to the country.

Travel With The Same Passport:  Always travel to Botswana with the same e visa passport you used for the application. This is because despite being an electronic visa, it is still linked to the passport you used for the registration.  Should you make the mistake of visiting Botswana with a different visa, you will not be allowed into the country.

Print Out A Copy: It is a wise idea to print out a copy of the e visa once you receive it in your inbox. This copy should be with you on your trip as the immigration officers on duty will ask for it.  Also endeavor to keep it with you when you are in public places in case there is a need to prove that you are in the country legally.

Leave Before It Expires: Never forget the date your visa expires and plan your itinerary around that time.  Note that your visa starts counting the moment you set foot within Botswana's jurisdiction and it is Illegal to overstay your visa.  Visitors who remain in the country on an expired visa will be sanctioned

Not For Work or Study: This electronic visa is not for work or study but strictly for the purpose it was designed for. There is a work visa for those who have secured employment in Botswana as well as a study visa for international students studying at Botswana colleges. These visas are available at foreign missions abroad.

Hold A Return Ticket: Before you leave your country for Botswana always procure a return ticket for your return trip or an onward ticket if you plan to travel to another country. This is important for two reasons; it saves you the cost of booking a ticket at short notice and it proves to the authorities that you have every intention of returning to your country before or on the day your visa expires.
