      Bosnia and Herzegovina Visa Policy

Bosnia has an independent visa policy that mandates every visitor to apply for a visa and get one before they can enter the country. Visas are issued through any of their foreign missions abroad for different purposes. However, those who qualify for their visa waiver program because of their nationality don’t require visas to visit.

Bosnia is an applicant for European Union membership, and the process is ongoing. To this end, it maintains a similar Schengen visa policy in many aspects.

For instance, visa-free access is granted to visitors with Schengen Annex II nationality as well as many other countries like Turkey, Oman, Kuwait, China, and the like. Determining which country to include on the visa-free list is based on agreements with such countries.

Bosnia and Herzegovina offers free access to citizens from more than 100 countries and territories, including refugees and stateless persons who are allowed to enter the country and stay for 90 days in 180 days in most cases. There are other considerations with the citizens of Ukraine, and Russia granted an extended 2 months of stay.

Bosnia and Herzegovina issues substitute visas to holders and residents of Schengen and EU member countries. The same privilege is extended to visa holders and residents of the US who may wish to enter Bosnia and Herzegovina. Substitute Visa holders are permitted to stay for 30 days maximum. However, note that substitute visas are not available to Kosovo passport holders.

      ETIAS Entry

Bosnia does not have an electronic visa program for short-term visitors but is set to adopt the European Travel Information and Authorization System once it becomes active in 2024. By allowing holders of Schengen visas entry, the same grace is set to be extended to ETIAS holders who are citizens from visa-exempt countries on the Schengen list.

The ETIAS initiative was originally a European Union affair, but its influence is set to extend across the entire European continent. While Bosnians will be required to apply for ETIAS to visit Schengen countries, the country will also accept it as an entry document.

ETIAS is a pre-screening program set in place to screen visa-exempt visitors. The program is designed to identify persons who pose a risk to the continent and bar them from entry. It is valid for 90 days and can be used for multiple tourism, business, transit, or medical treatment trips. Holders can stay in the country for up to 90 days in 180 days.

Key Information About Bosnia and Herzegovina ETIAS

Find vital details for visitors traveling to Bosnia and Herzegovina with the European Travel Information Authorization System.

Bosnia is not an issuer: It is important to note that the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina do not issue ETIAS or approved application. Bosnia and Herzegovina is not a Schengen country and a member of the European Union, so it lacks the authority to issue such approvals. To apply for this document, you must apply to any of the European Union countries with authorization.

Only For Eligible Applicants: Another important thing to bear in mind is that this ETIAS is only for non-Europeans who already qualify for visa exemption. If you can enter the Schengen Zone without a visa, you will be eligible to apply for ETIAS once it becomes mandatory in 2024. If you don’t qualify for visa exemption, kindly apply for a Bosnian and Herzegovina visa.

Apply On Time: ETIAS applications take only thirty minutes or less to approve, so you should endeavor to submit your application at least 24 hours before your approval. Although you may apply it on the same day to intend to travel, it’s best to have your document sorted out on time.

Visit Another Schengen Country First You should always visit another Schengen country first before traveling to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Your first destination should be the country that issued the ETIAS approval in line with Schengen travel regulations.

Respect The 180-Day Cycle: On the travel regulations, visitors can stay in Europe with ETIAS for up to 90 days within six months. If you stay for more than 90 days, you will have broken the rules, and sanctions will likely follow.

Only For Visa-Exempt Nationals: Don’t forget that ETIAS is solely for visitors who are nationals of visa-exempt countries. If you are not from Bosnia and Herzegovina, you should apply for a Schengen visa instead from an EU country or a Bosnian visa from any foreign missions abroad.

Travel With The Same Passport: It is important to always travel with the same passport you used for the ETIAS application because they are linked. Persons who arrive with different passports will not be allowed into the country.

Passport: Your passport should be the one you used for your ETIAS registration, so avoid tracking with a different one. Remember that ETIAS permits are like e-visas; they are linked to the passport information, and border agents will request it to validate your entry. If your passport does not remain valid beyond your stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina or any other Schengen country, do well to apply for a New passport before you submit your ETIAS registration.

Application Fee: The application fee is paid by only some applicants as it is age specific.

Persons outside the bracket of 18-70 years are exempted from the ETIAS application fee. Also, note that this fee is not refundable after it is paid.
